Job Posting: Program Coordinator, California Food Literacy Center
About California Food Literacy Center: California Food Literacy Center came to life in July 2011 to fill a critical gap: helping individuals improve their knowledge, attitude, and behavior towards real food. We teach food literacy education to 2,400 low-income K-5th graders annually, teaching them to cook, about nutrition and where their food comes from.
The mission was born to create change today for a healthy, sustainable tomorrow through community food education. Founding Executive Director, Amber Stott, is joined by community members who make up the center’s board, volunteer committees, and support system. As a growing team, they’ve combined their creative ideas, expertise, and energy around food, health, and social change to improve the community.
Teaching children with our curriculum Your Sandwich Can Save the World! is our primary objective. By educating through local nonprofits and schools, we help kids develop healthy food habits while they are young, creating healthy lifestyles that will last a lifetime.
About the Position: California Food Literacy Center is in a period of high growth and expansion throughout the Sacramento region. The expansion includes hiring someone to support the core program, its schools and volunteers. This position requires someone to juggle many responsibilities, while representing the nonprofit and our mission in the community. The role encompasses four needs of the organization: volunteer coordination, teaching food literacy, outreach and community development, and executive assistant tasks. The hope is that this role will continue to evolve and develop as the organization grows in size and staff.

Volunteer and Teaching Coordination
- Coordinate, organize, and distribute teaching supplies and equipment.
- Prep and ready teachers.
- Schedule teachers and advocates for classes, coordinate and communicate schedules, assign jobs and tasks.
- Track volunteer hours.
- Assist Board of Director’s Program Committee with program development and implementation.
- Act as back-up teacher in case of teacher or advocate absence.
- Teach weekly Wednesday classes at Capitol Heights Academy.
- Coordinate volunteer orientation and appreciation events.
Outreach and Community Development
- Assist with grant writing and reporting.
- Serve on community committees as assigned by Executive Director.
- Write content for various external communications.
- Answer basic community questions and requests.
- Coordinate event logistics.
- Represent the nonprofit at fairs and community events.
- Assist with outreach campaigns, including Food Literacy Academy recruitment.
- Attend Food Literacy Academy.
- Coordinate email newsletters and update website content.
- Manage agency calendar.
- Attend Board of Directors meetings and take minutes.
- Assist with legal and government required paperwork.
- Data entry.
- BA/BS degree or higher. Preference to teaching, nutrition, and communications majors.
- Basic cooking skills. (Home cooking is OK!)
- Understanding or familiarity with local food, food systems and nutrition helpful.
- Teaching, coaching, or other experience working with children preferred.
- Event planning experience preferred.
- Candidate must pass a Department of Justice background check and have a negative TB test.
This position requires:
- Some nights and weekends. A flexible schedule is required.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs.
- Reliable transportation and California drivers’ license.
Position pays $25,000 to 30,000 per year, DOE, 40 hours per week non-exempt and no benefits. There is a generous holiday and vacation package. We encourage applicants of a diverse background to apply.
