California Food Literacy Center is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural Food Literacy Academy! The call for applications is open until Jan 28.

This intensive 10-week training will prepare community volunteers to become certified Food Literacy Advocates, equipping them with the skills needed to teach food literacy in their community. (If you’re really lucky, we’ll even let you wear a veggie suit!)

The course will emphasize:

  • key food literacy lessons and activities to take into the classroom or community
  • classroom management and teaching to audiences of varying ages
  • nutrition 101
  • recipe development
  • cooking in a classroom
  • food safety & official food handler certificate
  • our food system

The Food Literacy Academy classes will start Wednesday, Feb 6 and will be held every Wednesday night from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for 10 weeks, including a session on Saturday, Feb 23. Graduates are expected to provide 100 hours of volunteer service annually back to the community on food related issues.

Cost of training is $250. A limited number of scholarships are available. Become a critical player in our region’s food movement by applying today: Food Literacy Academy.

I am very interested in furthering my knowledge and supporting food literacy in my community. I have a lunchtime organic and local catering service… I also, grow quite a bit of my own food and keep chickens. If there is any possibility of getting the cost down, please contact me and I will gratefully volunteer in any way that you find appropriate.
    Thank you so much,

      Hi Lauri

Yes we will if we get funding for it. It will be in fall if that works out. Look out for news about it! Thanks for your interest.
